Raisen/Bhopal: A government doctor who killed his third wife using poisonous injection five years ago has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court in Raisen district.

The accused Dr Ajay Chandel, posted with apex government Hamidia Hospital in Bhopal has been arrested and sent to Raisen district judge following the order of the court on Thursday.

The crime had been perpetrated by the doctor when he was posted with the Raisen district hospital five years ago. He had been arrested earlier but was out on bail.

The accused doctor killed his wife by mixing poison with his third wife Nitu’s medicine and then injecting it to her after failing to get dowry of Rs 5 lakh that he demanded, according to the case diary, government prosecutor Pawan Chaube told NewsBits.in.

The case was being heard by the additional district judge (ADJ) court of Raisen and on Thursday ADJ-III Dr Ramesh Sahu pronounced sentences for demand of dowry (two years), dowry death (seven years) and murder (life imprisonment) that would run concurrently.

The incident had occurred on December 25, 2011. Accused doctor Chandel, then 38, got his wife Nitu (30) admitted for fever at the Raisen district hospital in the evening and later administered the lethal injection to her.

The couple was married one-and-half year before the incident and Dr Chandel was also reportedly administering her slow poison to get rid of Nitu as she could not bring him the desired dowry. (Image courtesy: therefusers.com)
