BHOPAL: Creativity in film songs, especially, the decline in standards of lyrics in Bollywood--this was the topic that came up for discussion during the release of a book in Bhopal.

The book has been written by Hisamuddin Faruqui. It focuses on a span of nearly a century--analysing the songs written in early days of the films, the changes in later years and the gradual fall in standards in recent years.

Speaking on the occasion, Faruqui gave several examples to explain how lyrics in movies in the past had a social message. Now a days, it is the musician's tune that directs how lyrics are written.

"Though the songs were not considered part of literature, the fact is that a vast majority of them had literary value unlike the lyrics penned in this era that are often meaningless", he said.

Faruqui's book, 'Filmi geeton mein takhliqiyat' or Creativity in Film Songs has been published in Urdu. During the event, speakers urged him to also publish the book in Hindi, so that it reaches the Hindi populace as well.

Madhya Pradesh has given maximum number of lyricists to film industry after Uttar Pradesh, said the speakers. Poet Mahtab Alam spoke at length about the role of lyrics and the works of eminent lyricists. He termed the book as an important work.

Authors Khalid Abidi, Iqbal Masood, Poet Anjum Barabankvi, Director Culture Manoj Srivastava and several other prominent citizens attended the programme. Literary society, Tahzib, organised the book release function, which was held in State Museum in Bhopal.
