BHOPAL: Congress legislator Hemant Katare has been booked for raping a girl.

The girl, who studied at Makahanlal Chaturvedi University of Journalism, had been earlier arrested and sent to jail on judicial custody, for attempt to blackmail Katare.

The Congress leader had complaint to police in this regard. But in a fresh twist, the girl's letter from jail, became a basis for FIR against Katare. Her letter in which she blamed the legislator for sexually exploiting her, reached the DIG.

Now Katare has been booked for rape. A video of the girl was released recently in which she said that she was in a relationship with Katare and it was consensual though they fell out later. She was caught by crime branch.

The allegation was that she was blackmailing the leader and was attempting to extort. The police personnel had claimed to have laid a trap and arrested her, then. The girl is still in jail.

The police officials say that her statement would be recorded. Meanwhile, Katare has gone underground after the charges. Congress leaders claim that it is an attempt to target party leaders.

They express surprise that how could FIR be registered on complaint of someone who is already in jail on charges of blackmailing. Party leader Manak Agarwal said that it was under government pressure that Katare was now booked.
