Custodial death in MP: 5 policemen suspended, panel seeks explanation from police

BHOPAL: A youth died in police custody in Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh.

Suhail Khan, 21, was arrested and kept in police custody, where he died in suspicious circumstances.

His kin allege that Khan was framed and tortured in custody, which resulted in the death on Friday (April 2, 2021).

The youth was arrested for alleged possession of a drug and was kept at the Narcotics wing's custody, however, he died in mysterious circumstances. The deceased's brother alleged that Rs 50 lakh was demanded for his brother's release.

Sohail and Asif were arrested with 90 gram smack, claimed police. However, on Friday night, he died in mysterious circumstances. Kin had also staged a demonstration and demanded action. After the incident, they sought FIR against those policemen on charges of murder.

Five policemen have been suspended in this regard. Khan belonged to Pratapgarh (Rajasthan), close to MP border. His family members said that they got information that he was unable to breathe and when they reached the district hospital, they found him dead. 

"They had taken him on the pretext of interrogating but didn't return. Later, we were told that it was Narcotics wing that had taken him and an official demanded Rs 50 lakh for release", said relatives. "There are multiple injuries on the body", Suhail's relatives have said. 

The Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) has taken cognisance of this incident. The Commission member Sarabjeet Singh has sought a report from ADG Narcotics and Superintendnt of Police (SP), Mandsaur. He has also directed the police officials to ensure that all the CCTV footage iis be kept safe. [Photo is for representational purpose]
