LUCKNOW: A man was allegedly beaten in custody and tortured for hours, which caused his death in Hapur district in Uttar Pradesh.

The victim Pradeep Tomar's 10-year-old son was outside the police stationwhen his father was being beaten by policemen who were allegedly drunk.

"They kept torturing him and when I cried and asked them to leave him, they gave me a packet of snacks", Tomar's son later told media persons.

When they realised his condition was critical, they took him to a local hospital that refused to admit him. The victim was bleeding but they roamed around and finally took to Meerut, where he was declared dead. The incident had occurred earlier this month & it was only after NHRC intervention, that the government has acted.

"My father was given electric shock and hit with lathis-screw driver. I was threatened and gun pushed into my mouth, I was told that they would kill me if I speak to anyone about it", he said. Tomar was brought to police station from a toll tax plaza and policemen suspected his role in the death of his wife.

However, he had no other prior case or criminal record. NHRC had intervened in the case and asked UP government to take action apart from ensuring the safety of the boy who witnessed the horrific torture. Now, at least four persons have been booked for assault and murder. They include Circle officer (CO) Santosh Kumar, SHO Yogesh Balian and sub-inspector Ajab Singh.
