SHIVPURI: Imagine the situation when doctors have to carry a 'danda' (baton) by their side even as they examine patients?

The photograph shows Dr Govind Singh, the civil surgeon of Shivpuri district hospital, carrying the baton by his side.

It is a telling picture of a prevalent trend in the state where government doctors are attacked by kin/attendants of patients, or others and vice-versa.

The doctors are therefore prepared for any eventuality-- and Dr Singh has taken to keep a baton with himself for likely self-defense.

The issue of security of doctors at Shivpuri district hospital came up for discussion when Collector-SP made a joint visit to the hospital recently. The Collector asked civil surgeon that how come doctors get attacked.

During inspection, he expressed surprise that though security personnel of a private company are now deployed and still doctors get attacked.

The police officials say that if there are attacks, the doctors should lodge FIR and approach the police. However, after the meeting it was decided that home guards personnel would be deployed in the hospital for additional security.

It was also decided that guards would be present round the clock, the staff at the police outpost would be increased and Dial 100 scheme would be extended to the hospital.
