BHOPAL: A debt-ridden farmer committed suicide in Madhya Pradesh.

Raj Singh consumed insecticide at his home in Khandwa.

Singh had taken a loan of Rs 1 lakh but crop failure apparently sent him into depression.

He had got a notice asking him to pay back the amount despite having no money, Family members said that he had sowed soyabean during the monsoon season but the crop failed. Later, he prepared for the 'rabi' crop but there was no water for irrigation.

It is learnt that officials had cut the water supply and hence there was no water flow. "He didn't have money and hence he was unable to even marry off his daughter", said one of his brothers.

He had left home consumed insecticide. The body was spotted in the fields. Subsequently, the police were informed. A case has been registered in this regard and investigation is on to ascertain the circumstances that led to the suicide, said local police.

In Madhya Pradesh, farmers' suicides continue unabated. Last year, farmers had taken to streets and launched statewide agitation. There was firing on agitating farmers in Mandsaur. The state goverment had promised to look into the issues and redress them. However, the suicides continue.
