BHOPAL/BARWANI: In an unseemly incident, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and senior Congress leader Bala Bachchan had a public face-off in an official function in Barwani on Saturday.

The situation was aggravated by angry reactions from the crowd including both BJP and Congress supporters who were present in the event.

Chouhan was on the stage and took the mike to address the gathering when Bachchan, acting leader of opposition protested.

The Congress leader was upset that he was not called to speak. "As per protocol, I was supposed to speak but I wasn't called to address the gathering", he said.

There was a face-off. However, as Bachchan stood to protest on the dais, there was acrimony. Congress supporters, who were upset with the incident, too began raising slogans. Sensing that the event was taking an ugly turn, Chouhan handed over the mike to Bachchan.

Subsequently, the leader of opposition began addressing the gathering. Now it was the turn of the BJP workers in the crowd to express their displeasure as the CM had succumbed to Bala Bachchan's wishes.

The programme was organised to dedicate to public the memorial of freedom fighter Bhima Naik. After the programme, Bala Bachchan said that he protested on the stage because it was an official function that was being turned into BJP's event.

"Since this was a official event, I should have been called to speak as leader of opposition and this was my right. Hence, I raised the issue with CM and asked him whether he agreed with this point or not", he said.
