Bhopal/Satna: In a tragic incident that also highlights the societal pressures and constricted mindsets, a man in Satna killed his daughter and committed suicide apparently because he couldn’t settle her marriage in aftermath of his elder son’s inter-caste marriage.

The incident occurred in the wee hours of Tuesday. A suicide note has been recovered by the police, where the father Suresh Singh (47) said that he was committing suicide at his own volition.

However, the body of his 22-year-old daughter Manisha was also found, apparently smothered to death with a pillow. The bodies were first detected by Suresh’s wife Pratima in the wee hours.

The local police said that the Suresh Singh owned a hair cutting saloon that operated from the ground floor of the house he stayed. Suresh returned home at around 10.00pm on Monday night and later the family that also includes Suresh’s second son Yogesh went to sleep.

Police said Suresh and Manisha, an engineering sixth semester student, slept in separate adjacent room in ground floor as Manisha studied late till night. Pratima got up to drink water during wee hours and upon checking on Manisha found her not responding. Then she discovered Suresh hanging in his room.

Sources said that Suresh’s elder son Manish married a girl from different caste two years ago and was now living in Rewa. Following this marriage, Suresh was finding it very difficult to find an alliance for Manisha. He was tensed because of this and might have taken the extreme step in desperation, sources said.

In his suicide note, Suresh also reportedly said that no postmortem should be conducted on his body. (Image courtesy: wnep.com)
