BHOPAL: Scores of Congress workers--mostly NSUI activists, were injured when police resorted to lathi-charge on protesting party workers on Monday.

Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Arun Yadav was among those who were injured in the lathi-charge.

The party had taken to streets to protest action against Superintendent of Police (SP), Katni, who was transferred for unearthing a hawala racket.

Also, Congress was asking for CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan's resignation and demanded sacking minister Sanjay Pathak whose name came up in the hawala racket.

The protest began in the afternoon. Hundreds of party workers including National Students Union of India (NSUI) workers had gathered on the Link Road, near the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) office.

As party workers tried to march towards CM residence, the police tried to stop them. The policemen began lathi-charge and Congress workers were thrashed. Arun Yadav was hit in the head and he received multiple injuries.

Yadav was initially taken to JP Hospital and was later referred to Hamidia Hospital. Yadav's condition is reported to be serious. The PCC chief could be rushed to Delhi for treatment.

Dozens of other Congress workers including party leaders were injured. Some passersby who were caught in the melee, also got hurt. The party workers are getting treated in different hospitals.
