Shocking: Durg-Bhilai has highest suicide rate in India, Chennai is suicide capital

BHOPAL: Durg-Bhilai, the twin city in Chhattisgarh, has the highest suicide rate in the country.

The rate stands at 34.9, which is highest among all the cities.

The shocking figure has come to light in the latest Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India (ADSI) report of the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB).

The rate is calculated by number of pesons who committed suicide per lakh persons. It makes people in Durg-Bhilai most prone to committing suicide.

Durg-Bhilainagar is followed by Kollam (32.5) and Rajkot (29.8), the cities in Kerala and Rajasthan respectively.

The trend is similar in Chhattisgarh, which leads in suicide rate among big states (Sikkim is at the top). The rate of suicide in states shows Chhattisgarh having a high rate (27.7). Telangana equals it. Tamil Nadu has a rate of 22.8. Sikkim has the highest rate (37). NCRB has released the figures for the year 2015.

As far as number of suicides is concerned, Chennai has emerged as suicide capital of India. The highest number of suicides was reported from this city in 2015. Chennai recorded 2274 suicides, followed by Bengaluru 1855 and Delhi 1553.

Total suicides in country

As many as 1.33 lakh committed suicide in India in the year. Maharashtra leads with a figure of 16,970 followed by Tamil Nadu (15,777) and West Bengal (14,602). Karnataka and MP also witnessed more than 10,000 suicides. Photo: sbsnw.org
