BHOPAL: Hoshangabad district will be named 'Narmadapuram', said chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday. He made the announcement during his visit to the district.

Chouhan along with his wife, Sadhna Singh, performed 'puja' on the occasion--worshipping the holy river. Also, Chouhan later sang a bhajan, praising the river. The chief minister said that the cities on the banks of the Narmada river would be developed and it will be ensured that the development is natural, not the cement and concrete structures.

He also promised to keep Narmada clean. Chouhan sang the bhajan, 'Maa Ka Bhajan Sukhdaayi, Jaope re mere bhaai....'. Swami Ramkamal Das, Mahamandleshwar Madhavanand, MPs Uday Pratap Singh, Sanjay Patil and legislator Sitasharan Sharma were present on the occasion.

Besides, he said that the district hospital in the town would be upgraded. He also asked the municipal council to ensure that the sewerage water must not pollute the river. The CM said that he had also taken a vow to plant one sapling everyday for the entire year.

This is Shivraj Chouhan's fourth term as chief minister. In this tenure, his decisions and politics has been on lines of UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath--from bringing laws against inter-religious marriages to announcing that properties of those found involved in stone pelting would be seized.

On the occasion of Narmada Jayanti, thousands of earthen lamps were lit. There was attractive lighting arrangements in and around Sethani Ghat apart from the fireworks. Earlier, Chouhan worshipped minor girls (kanya pujan). He also felicitated the saints who were present on the occasion.
