BHOPAL: Bajrang Dal workers went on rampage in Vidisha on Sunday, a day after one of their leaders was murdered.

The situation took a serious turn--shops and houses were attacked and burnt. As  Bajrang Dal workers took to streets, curfew was imposed in the city.

Heavy police force has been deployed in the city. Additional force has been sent from Bhopal. Senior officials have also reached the city as trouble continues despite curfew.

Deepak Kushwaha, a local Bajrang Dal leader was murdered after a conflict with local residents on Saturday. This led to Bajrang Dal workers taking to streets, forcing shops to bring down shutters on Saturday evening.

Though 11 of the 13 accused, many of them belonging to particular community were arrested, a bandh was called on Sunday by Bajrang Dal and some social and community-based organisations.

The original row between the victim and the accused was related to purchase of liquor, said sources. But later the incident took communal colour as many accused belonged to a particular community.

But the situation worsened on Sunday. Finally the district collector imposed curfew. Still, there were incidents of arson and attacks on properties from the city. Policemen are patrolling the streets to control the situation.

Vidisha was the constituency represented by former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the Lok Sabha. In a way it is CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan's home constituency too, as he has repeatedly won election from here. Currently, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj represents Vidisha.
