Bhopal: In an incident that underlines the acute deprivation faced by a section of society, an elderly man died allegedly of starvation in Pathra village (Jatara tehsil) of Tikamgarh district in Madhya Pradesh.

The body of the man, reportedly about a fortnight old, was discovered by the neighbours after they felt stench emanating from the shanty of the man who lived alone.

The neighbours also found that there was nothing to eat in the shanty of the man and expressed apprehension that the Lakhan Dubey, 55, might have died of starvation.

The villagers called the Jatara police, but they allege that the last rites of Dubey were performed without any postmortem, despite the doubts raised by the neighbours.

Villagers Kaushal Kishore and Suraj Pathak said that Lakhan Dubey, whose movements were restricted due to ailment, had been abandoned by his family who left for New Delhi for earning livelihood (through manual labour).

The village people provided food to him off and on. But during last few days Lakhan Dubey was not to be seen.

When the villagers felt a stench emanating from his shanty, they found Lakhan dead with all the containers and utensils at his shanty totally empty.

They therefore expressed apprehension that Lakhan, who was already hard pressed to get food, might have died of starvation.

Despite attempts, the Tikamgarh collector Priyanka Das could not be contacted for her comments on the incident.
