Bhopal: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is now planning to launch a ‘Garib Kalyan’ (welfare of poor) agenda, with a view to ensure basic necessities like food, clothing, housing, education, health and employment to underprivileged section.

A draft of the agenda is likely to be finalized and submitted to party president Amit Shah before September 25 (birth anniversary of ideologue Deendayal Upadhayay), MP chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told media persons on Monday.

A meeting of a party sub-committee was held to discuss the draft of agenda at the CM House in Bhopal. Chouhan presided over the meeting that was attended by his Maharashtra and Jharkhand counterparts Devendra Fadnavis and Raghuvar Das and party vice-president (MP in-charge) Vinay Sahasrabuddhe.

Chouhan said that the aim is to implement the agenda in this birth centenary year of Deendayal Upadhayay.

Many schemes for welfare of poor were launched during Congress rule, but the condition of poor people remained the same. Now BJP is trying to ensure that underprivileged people are not deprived of basic facilities.

Welfare schemes in BJP-ruled states are being studied and these would form the base for the agenda, he said.

Meanwhile, the MP Congress has taken a jibe at the BJP for trying to hijack principles and policies of Congress and its luminaries like Gandhi and Ambedkar. Chief spokesman of Congress KK Mishra said that moving away from its basic agenda the BJP is now trying to take up the ‘Garibi Hatao’ plank of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

“It is ridiculous that the party which ignores plight of the poor and the steep price rise and is serving the business causes of Ambani, Adani and Ramdeo Baba, should talk about ‘Garib Kalyan’,” Mishra said in a statement.

He added that it seemed the planks like Ram Temple, uniform civil code and article 370 were merely electoral ploy of the BJP.
