HORRIFIC: 4,527 women raped in MP in a year; 2,200 minors among them

BHOPAL: As many as 4,527 women were raped in Madhya Pradesh in a year.

Home Minister Bhupendra Singh said this in reply to a question in Assembly on Monday.

Singh said that this is the figure from February 1, 2016 till now.

Replying to Congress legislator Ramniwas Rawat's question, Home minister said that from the February 1 2016 to June 30, 1,868 women were raped and 108 were victims of gang-rape.

They included 883 women and 985 minor girls. Later, in the period ranging from July 1, 2016 to February this year, the figure suggested that 2,411 women were raped (140 gang raped).

Those raped include 611 women belonging to scheduled castes, 662 of scheduled tribes, 750 victims belonging to other backward castes and 388 from un-reserved category.

Among the rape victims 1,275 were minors. The figure of women who were killed after rape was 13, while 14 others committed suicide after the rape. The reply was given in the Assembly today.
