RAIPUR: In a big jolt to Congress, BSP has gone ahead and announced alliance with Janata Congress Chhattisgarh.

The decision to contest polls is a shot in arm for Ajit Jogi.

But for Congress, it has been a setback, as the party was hopeful of an alliance with Mayawati.

Now the BSP and Janata Congress Chhattisgarh will together contest the polls and also campaign with each other in all the 90 assembly constitutencies in the State.

Jogi's party will field candidate on 55 seats while the rest (35) will go to BSP. Congress was not keen to give more than a dozen seats to BSP. However, Mayawati wanted a respectable alliance. Also, Congress seemed to delay and this upset Mayawati.

Hence, she decided to go with Jogi. This puts Congress in an uncomfortable situation. Jogi's party suddenly appears to be a formidable challenger, as it may get Dalit votes due to the alliance. In a state where victory margins are less, the tie-up can work wonders.

But it may be a good news for BJP. Already, BJP has been terming Jogi's party as a third force. BJP hoped that Janata Congress Chhattisgarh will cut Congress votes. Now with BSP alliance, it feels that Congress will suffer. However, if the alliance works well, it can create a headache for BJP too.
