Met office gets it right; MP gets 15% excess rain at season end

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh received 1096.6mm of rainfall this monsoon (between June 1 and September 30), an excess of 15% over the normal rainfall expected during the season (957.4mm).

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) announced this at the end of official monsoon on Saturday. The figures have come as a booster for the RMC as its predictions made before onset of monsoon have come true.

The MeT office had predicted in June this year that the state would receive about 113% of the long period average of rainfall (13% excess).

Similarly, West MP meteorological sub-division received 1006.2mm of rainfall, which is 14% excess while East MP received 1214.1mm of rainfall, which is 16% excess.

The Met office had predicted that West MP would receive 885-1000 mm of rain while East MP would receive 1083-1188mm of rainfall for the season.

“We are happy that our forecast for the season has come true. Even about onset of monsoon, our predictions proved right,” the director of RMC Anupam Kashyapi said while talking to media persons on Saturday.

The MeT office had predicted that monsoon would strike between June 18 and 20 and would cover entire state between June 28 and 30. Monsoon struck eastern border of MP on June 19 this year and covered the entire state on July 2.

 

Bhopal receives excess, Indore normal rain

The capital Bhopal received as much as 47% excess rain in the season (1464.1mm compared to expected 998.6mm rainfall. Indore received just 5% extra rain (881.5mm compared to 839.7mm). Overall, only 5 districts received less than normal rainfall (Barwani, Gwalior, Morena, Bhind and Datia). During 2015, as many as 23 districts received deficient rain while in 2014, in all 29 districts received deficient rain.

 

Winter to be normal, to extend till March first week

The RMC has predicted normal winter this season and the minimum temperature might drop to level of 3-4 degrees Celsius on few days during core winter time (December 15 to January 15, 2017). The RMC director Kashyapi said that night temperatures would start dipping by October end and by mid-November, mild winter feel would be experienced.
