BHOPAL: Tariq Zafar has been removed from the post of Vice-chancellor of MP Bhoj (Open) University, just a few days before his retirement was due.

Zafar is being replaced by Dr Ravindra Kanhere, who now takes over as VC.

The Higher Education department has cited irregularities as reason behind the action against Zafar.

Tariq Zafar had earlier offered to quit. However, just four weeks before his scheduled retirement, the State government decided to sack him. There were charges that Zafar had regularised certain contract employees.

The issue of some other faculty appointments in the University had also came to fore when some other applicants had approached the court against appointments made the in the university without government approval.

Sources say that though Zafar had sensed that he was in the line of fire, he could do precious little. He had offered to resign but as he had fallen out of favour, it was clear that his resignation would not be accepted, rather he would be removed.

Kanhere is controller of examination. Governor OP Kohli has appointed him as the new VC. The action was taken under section 33 of the MP Bhoj (Open) University. On the recommendation of state government, the Governor took the action.
