Distressed farmer hangs self to death in Madhya Pradesh

BHOPAL: An elderly farmer has committed suicide in Niwari in Madhya Pradesh.

Pyarelal Yadav, 60, was upset due to the damage to crops and his inability to pay back the loan amount.

Yadav, a resident of Chandeli Toria in Niwari, hanged himself by a tree on his fields. The body was found later. His son Roop Singh told journalists that his father was depressed due to crop failure.

Besides, Pyarelal Yadav was unable to pay the huge electricity bill (irrigation). And, after poor rainfall and crop loss, he lost all hope. The farmer had also taken loan from money lenders. As the electricity bill was not paid, the family had received a notice for attachment of the property.

This was a big shock for Yadav, who was already struggling to run the household and at the same time was having difficulty in paying back the loan amount to bank and money-lenders. In 2019, Madhya Pradesh had reported over 540 farmers' suicides. The national figure was more than 10,340.
