Bhopal: Even as the public thrashing of two Muslim women on Mandsaur Railway Station in caused uproar in Rajya Sabha and Madhya Pradesh assembly, the state government is waiting a complaint from the jailed women to act against the cow vigilantes who assaulted them on Tuesday.

MP home minister Bhupendra Singh, while asserting that ‘no one would be allowed to take law in their hands’ added while talking to media persons on Wednesday that ‘if there was a complaint from the (thrashed) women, suitable action would be initiated’.

Interestingly, videos and photographs ofthe entire incident are available where a mob could be seen assaulting the two women and raising slogans in presence of police.

The two women from Ratlam, who were carrying meat (later confirmed by local veterinarians as buffalo meat), were thrashed at the Mandsaur Railway station in presence of police after rumours spread that they were carrying beef.

The police had reached the station to arrest the women after getting information that they were illegally carrying meat for sale. However, police allowed a crowd, including women shouting slogans ‘Gau mata ki jai’ (hail cow mother) were allowed to assault the women for quite some time before they were whisked away to police station.

Slaughter of buffalo and consumption of its meat is legal in Madhya Pradesh but permit is required for sale, which the women did not have.

Earlier, in the morning, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati took the matter up in Rajya Sabha and tore at the BJP government in MP to allow disrespect and thrashing of women over cow vigilantism, although the meat later turned out to be of buffalo.

Leader of opposition (from Congress) Ghulam Nabi Azad said that cow should be protected but Muslims and Dalits should not be targeted under this garb. Later BSP and Congress members entered the well and shouted anti-government slogans.

Union minister of state for minority affairs, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, said that the government condemned violence in any state and was of firm belief that country was run by constitution and law. He said that the government was committed to welfare of all sections of society and was oriented towards development.

In Madhya Pradesh, deputy leader of opposition Bala Bachchan said that atrocities against minorities was on the rise in MP, much more than anywhere else and the state government was doing nothing to revert the situation.
