BHOPAL/INDORE: Dr Bhakti Yadav, Indore's first woman doctor with an MBBS degree who continues her practice even at the age of 91, has been selected for the Padma award.

The doctor who has been treating patients for almost 64 years, has been chosen for Padma Shri.

Dr Bhakti Yadav is known for conducting thousands of childbirths without charging a single penny from the patients.

She has treated poor patients without fee and only took nominal fee from the affluent. Even at the age of 91, she looks after a few patients every day.

The renowned doctor was born in 1926. When she got admission in MBBS, she was the only woman in the class. She completed her degree (MBBS) in the the year 1952.

She began practice soon after and made it a lifelong mission--treating poor without fee and never taking any charge from women who came to her for delivery. Her husband Dr Chandra Singh Yadav was also dedicated towards serving humanity.

Earlier, she had worked as gynaecologist in Bhandari mill's hospital. But after it was closed, she opened in clinic in her house in 1978. Together, the doctor couple treated tens of thousands of patients for over six decades.

Dr Chandra Singh passed away in 2014. Dr Bhakti Yadav feels that doctors these days don't get involved with their patients and have no special bond with them. Her son, Dr Raman Yadav, 67, is taking the legacy forward.
