BHOPAL: After ten daughters, the baby boy was born to a couple in Madhya Pradesh.

The wish of the couple to have the male child was fulfilled finally. Laxmi, 45, gave birth to her 11th child in the government hospital in Shivpuri, recently.

This is just another example of the social mindset that the couples go on for kids until they have a baby boy. Her husband and the entire family expressed happiness over the birth of the child.

Shivpuri falls in Gwalior-Chambal region which is notorious for skewed sex ratio. Women are expected to bear a male child as early as possible. Female infanticide is widely practiced in the region and the sex ratio is less than 850 in several districts here.

The situation is so bad that in Bhind, there are 837 women for 1000 men. In Morena district, this is even worse as 822 women per 1,000 males. Clearly, the preference for son is an obsession despite awarness campaigns and government's efforts. Photo courtesy Bhaskar.com
