Bhopal:  In an unprecedented order, the anti-corruption court in Chhattisgarh slapped a hefty fine of Rs 3 crore worth penalty on an ex-official of state housing board in a case of disproportionate assets.

The special judge of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) also sentenced DK Diwan, the ex-commissioner of Chhattisgarh Housing Board to ten years of imprisonment, in an order issued on Tuesday.

The hefty cash penalty is said to be heaviest in the known history of the region for an anti-corruption case.

The ACB had conducted a raid on home and other premises owned by Diwan in 2014 following a tip-off of assets highly disproportionate to the known sources of income.

During the searches, Rs 34 lakh in cash and properties worth several crores had been unearthed. Following this, Diwan had been made an accused in case of disproportionate assets.

Diwan had failed to appear before the bureau despite repeated notices and went absconding. He was arrested six months later in April 2015 and had been facing legal proceedings since.
