BHOPAL: Four youths died when they had gone to the river for immersion of Lord Ganesha’s idol.

The incident occurred on late Tuesday night.

Police said that the youths had gone to the Narmada river bank at Boras in Udaipura.

But they got drowned. Local police said that many people from Rosra in Silwani had gone to the Narmada bank for immersion.

These youths had also gone to the river. Those who drowned include Hemant Lodhi, 35, Harshit Raghuvanshi, 18, Shailendra Kumar Raghuvanshi, 32, Ram Kishan, 20. Apart from them, another youth also drowned.

He was identified as Rohit Meena. Meena, 20, who hailed from Ramnagar in Mandideep, drowned at Ramkhedi Ghat in Betwa river bank in Obaidullahganj. This takes the number of deaths to five.

Police said that Harshit’s body was recovered. Efforts were on to find out other bodies. The divers were pressed into duty immediately after the incident, but the bodies were yet to be fished out.

The disaster management department’s personnel were also on the spot. Meanwhile, Rohit Meena’s kin said that he had come to his uncle’s village recently. Along with local residents, he went for immersion, where he lost his balance and got drowned.

Every year, there are such mishaps during immersion. Youths carrying the idol on boat, have drowned in the lakes in Bhopal in the past too. Despite district administration and officials’ caution and repeated warnings, many youths venture into deep water even if they can’t swim, and die.
