MUMBAI: The Shiv Sena has made a blistering attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), calling it the 'tawaif' (courtesan or mistress) of the party that is in power at the centre.

Upset over malfunctioning of EVMs and the VVPAT machines in the recently held by-elections, Sena has accused the Election Commission of being hand in glove with the BJP government at the centre, and helping the BJP win at any cost.

In a harsh editorial in the party mouthpiece Saamna, questions have been raised as how the voting percentage suddenly went up even though initially it was declared to be low in the Palghar bypoll in Maharashtra.

The party mouthpiece raised several questions ranging from the purchasing or EVMs from a private party to charges of ECI not listening to complaints.  asting doubts at the integrity of the officials in the ECI, a constitutional body, the Sena has said that it seems to be in cahoots with the BJP.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said that the BJP leaders are confident that come what may, they will win because of this reason. "The faith of people in the entire process has got weakened because of the manner in which tens of thousands of people can't vote in an election and complaints aren't entertained by ECI".

Meanwhile, BJP has said that the Shiv Sena is desperate and has anticipated defeat in the Palgarh election, which is prompting it to make such allegations. The Commission hasn't responded to the attack.
