Policeman attacked due to his beard, religious identity in Gujarat
VADODARA: A Muslim policeman was allegedly attacked due to his religious identity in Gujarat.
The attackers first used an objectionable word meant for Muslims to address Asif Ismail Sheikh, 45, and then beaten beating him.
'Without any provocation, they attacked me, pulled my beard, beat him and tried to strangle me', he told media persons. Sheikh said that he usually covered his face while leaving home.
Shockingly, after the incident, it took a long time before the FIR could be registered. Though Sheikh is a police constable, the authorities initially tried to hush it up as a minor quarrel though it was a clear case of hate crime and attack due to religious identity.
